BB5 Northern flicker (Colaptes auratus) and eastern redcedar (Juniperus virginiana), 2025
Watercolor and gouache painting on 9x12 paper, framed
Northern flickers are large, brown woodpeckers that occur in Florida year-round. They are often spotted on the ground because they love to eat ants and beetles, so you may see them hammering away at the soil like other woodpeckers drill into trees. When flushed, they often perch on horizontal branches rather than on the tree trunk like most woodpeckers. Like many birds, they take advantage of fruit like the eastern redcedar’s berry-like cones in the winter.
