The Eastern Spadefoot Toad likes to burrow in loose sandy soil and breed in shallow, ephemeral (temporary) wetlands. I have illustrated this guy sitting among common powderhorn lichen, pincushion moss, & dried sand live oak leaves. You can find all of these species in the upland sandy scrub of Florida.
